Throughout October we welcome our community to gather. Whether you are moved to volunteer, immerse in spirituality, or connect with others, we invite you to spend time this month reflecting on the eleven people who were killed in the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. When the shooting occurred on Shabbat morning on October 27, 2018, those who were already at synagogue were those who showed up every Saturday. They were humbly lifting up their community; they were minyan makers, people-greeters, warm and familiar faces. We aspire to further the spirit of their kindness and humility throughout the commemorative events that occur in October. Through volunteering, we spend time with the places, people and causes that mattered to the eleven and their families, and we work to continue their dedication. Through Torah study and prayer, we honor their commitment to their faith and community. Through the commemoration ceremony we remember the humanity of those who were killed, the impact they had on their loved ones, families, and friends, and the ways each day they cultivated light and warmth. Throughout this month we hope to support our community in feeling present and in processing the emotions that arise. We are here for you, and we hope you do not hesitate to stop in to talk. We also hope that the events and conversations this month inspire us all to bring to our lives what those eleven people brought with them to shul every day—a deep love for friendship, commitment, and community. |
