| As the seasons change and we enter summer, I wanted to make sure that you were invited to participate in programs with us. Over the last few months we have loved the opportunity to meet new people and try out different programs with them. This tent always has room for more people and ideas. I wanted to give a round of applause to the participants of the Healing with Nature Mosaic Program, who celebrated the opening reception and unveiling of their mosaic mural on Sunday. The mural, created over six weeks by 30+ participants, embodies the community healing that participants brought one another over the course of the program. Embedded within the mosaic are personal items of significance that represent the grief and loss they have experienced. Looking at this mural reminds me that none of us need to grieve alone. As Naila Francis said in our newsletter from April “grief is subterranean, uncomfortable, sticky, and dense, not at all what we tend to culturally value in the United States.” Our loss is our own, but it also exists in a mosaic of loss within our community. Seeing these pieces of the mosaic side-by-side shows me that when we hold one another up, there is always potential for beauty and healing. Thank you to our partners in this program: program directors Susan Spangler and Ted Cmarada, artist Laura Jean McLaughlin, Jewish Family and Community Services, Age-Friendly Greater Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and Media, Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, and Lively Pittsburgh.
To see more photographs and reflections and to learn more about the mural’s creation process, check out our webpage here! You can visit the mural throughout the summer at the Frick Environmental Center. Our programming is designed to open many doors to healing and to offer something for everybody. We are committed to creating trauma-informed wellness, community-building, and mental health services to benefit each person who participates and to build the resiliency of this community. Our goal is to consistently evolve to provide programming, events, education, or services that meet the current moment. We hope you will take this 3-minute survey on how we can best serve you. Click here to access survey. | As always, we welcome you to stop by our drop-in center from 9am-5pm on weekdays in Room 316 of the JCC for more information, empathetic listening, or a quiet space of reflection. |
