A Yom Kippur Reawakening about Dismantling Anti-Semitism and Racism
Join us on the holiest day of the Jewish year to reflect on the moral impact of racism and Anti-Semitism on Charlottesville VA, Pittsburgh, and our country. The event is free and open to all.
Charlottesville’s 2017 Unite the Right white supremacist rally was an alarming omen for the increase in extremism and violent acts perpetrated in communities and neighborhoods across the country. It was also a flashpoint event that re-awakened Charlottesville’s Jewish community to reflect individually and collectively on connecting to their Jewish heritage and to their roles in undoing racism.
We’ll screen Reawakening, a powerful documentary short about the Charlottesville Jewish community’s response to the rally, and have interactive conversations inspired by the film. We’ll also reflect on what we can do right here, right now in Pittsburgh as we welcome the Jewish new year with renewed commitment to racial justice. We will mourn together, in a Yizkor prayer, all of the losses we have experienced this year.
