100 Years of Women & Girls on the Bima

On March 18, 1922, 12 year old Judith Kaplan became bat mitzvah under the guidance of her father, Mordecai Kaplan, spiritual founder of Reconstructionist Judaism. Please join Congregation Dor Hadash and Reconstructing Judaism in celebrating the 100th anniversary of the day when, for the first time in Jewish history, a girl read publicly from Torah. Congregation Dor Hadash, located in Pittsburgh, is honored to be hosting a weekend of services and learning to honor the beginning of the public participation of Jewish girls and women in Jewish ritual life.
We hope that individuals and congregations around the country will take part in commemorating the day when women began to find our voices as full participants in Jewish ritual life. You are welcome at any or all of our events! Remote participation will be available.
We also invite you to share pictures and/or anecdotes from your own bat mitzvah! Please submit materials to batmitzvah100@dorhadash.net. These memories will be shared on our public web site.
Please visit https://www.dorhadash.net/bmc/100 for a complete schedule, details of workshops and speakers, and options for attending personally.
