April Newsletter: Supporting Yourself

May 10, 2023  ·  ,
Hello Friend,

Now may be a good time to take a few long, deep breaths. The jury selection of the Oct. 27, 2018 synagogue shooting trial began on Monday, and for many that may mean reactivation of trauma, grief, and deep emotions.

Whether you are experiencing your own reactivation or standing with your neighbors in solidarity, the ongoing trial does not require you to watch every moment of the news or engage with it in a way that harms your own wellbeing. It is not helpful to you or to those you care for to become drained by the constant barrage of news that will accompany much of this trial. In this situation, balance will likely be key for many community members. Take time to consider what aspects of the ongoing trial may be most difficult for you, and when possible use that foresight to plan time away from the events of the trial when you need it and prepare resources and networks of support for yourself.

One of the resources that we will be providing is free drop-in counseling 5 days a week starting May 1st. These therapists are here for everyone—whatever you may be going through, you are welcome here. This form of counseling is a great place to start for anyone who is not engaged in therapy. We are so grateful to the community of therapists and helpers giving their time and energy both at the courthouse and in the community.

We urge everyone to be kind, both to your neighbors and to yourselves. This is a community full of helpers, those who will take time out of their day to provide comfort, love, and care for one another. Call upon your friends, family, and community for support when you need it. We are proud to be part of this community and to be here for you during this time.
